Johann Gottfried Schadow
The Quadriga is Berlin's most famous sculpture. Hardly anyone knows that the Quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate is a replica. The basis for today's version is an impression from 1942. The plaster model, which was made in 1957, was restored from 2020 to 2022 in a collaboration between the Berlin Gipsformerei, the Art Advisory Council of the German Bundestag (Kunstbeirat des Deutschen Bundestages) and the Berlin State Monuments Office (Landesdenkmalamt Berlin).
Johann Gottfried Schadow is the founder of the Berlin sculpture school of classicism and the creator of many important works. Numerous sculptural masterpieces by Schadow, such as the tomb of Count von der Mark (1790), partial casts of the Quadriga (1793) and images of Princesses Friederike and Luise are part of the collection of the Berlin Gipsformerei.
